WHAT'S NEXT?

Your job can be better in a trade union.

Whether you work full-time or part-time, in the private sector, for a multinational, a government department or a public service, there’s a trade union for you.

Our jobs affect everything, from our finances to our daily routines. Trade unions help maintain a positive balance in our working lives by advocating for good conditions, benefits, and fair pay. In fact, union members tend to earn more and enjoy better working conditions than non-members. Plus, many unions offer additional benefits like advice services, health insurance, and opportunities for further education and training. And if you ever have an issue at work, your union will have your back.

Union membership is about more than individual benefits. When your workplace is part of a trade union, you and your colleagues have a stronger position in negotiating with your employer on things like working hours, pay, and conditions. This is called collective bargaining, and it gives you more power and security than negotiating on your own.

There are many workplace issues or improvements you can seek, for example, advocating for a 4 day week, increased workplace flexibility, wage increases, workplace protections and policies that benefit not just you, but everyone in your workplace. Trade unions ensure nobody is discriminated against. And if you’re involved in a disciplinary process it’s good to know your Union will always be there at your side.

If you’re thinking union membership might be for you, talk to your colleagues – you might be surprised by how many feel the same way.
It’s not just about your workplace – trade unions work to improve conditions for all working people, like the cost of living or the minimum wage, as well as lobbying for employment laws and leave entitlements that benefit everyone.

When more people are members of a trade union, we join a powerful movement for the rights and representation of working people on the island of Ireland. As a society we show we value working people of all backgrounds and industries. More members give trade unions more strength and influence so they can push for more rights and benefits for working people on the island of Ireland.
Trade unions play an important role in standing up for freedom, human rights and social justice. Trade unions stand up for women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights, campaign on issues like housing, health care and climate justice as well as taking a stance on global issues.

As part of a trade union, you are part of something bigger. Because trade unions are active in social justice and political causes, they allow their members to take a stance and make a difference on issues that matter to them. Our network of trade unions, not just on the island of Ireland but worldwide, are a powerful force for change.

If you’re interested in joining a trade union, we’ll help you take the next steps. Let us know what sector you work in and we will put you in touch with the best union for you, your workplace and your colleagues. It’s a great way to make a difference in your own life and the lives of others. You can also browse our directory of unions and what industries they represent here.
